The Formal Global Sports Political Power Index

DIF have developed a formal global sport political power index to provide a picture of how Denmark is performing in relation to other countries, and to identify which nations DIF ought to cooperate with

Introdution

To allow for a valuable debate of the formal sport political influence that nations of the World possess, a quantitative attempt was for the first time made in 2013. In October 2015 the analysis was repeated allowing for comparisons with the baseline from 2013.
This analysis is a calculation of 1.673 members from executive committees in 120 of the most important international and European sports federations collected in July - September 2015. Later a weighing with a score from 1 – 10 has been given to each member concerning the role in their committee and the respective international federation resulting in an index of all nations.

The analysis is to be repeated again in 2017. To read more about the methodology please see the report.

To simplify the vast dataset the investigation is split in two – A European and an international window. In the two windows below you are able to see the scores from 2013 and 2015 by shifting the year. Additionally it is possible to sort all nations’ rank by sport, continent, and international/European points. Lastly one can see the rank in a map and find the scores related to capita and GDP.

• Enter the first window if you want to compare European countries (use of scores from both European and international federations)
• Enter the second window if you want to compare countries across all continents (only use of scores from international federations)

Beneath the visualizations you find a fact box concerning the methodology of the analysis.

This analysis is best seen in horizontal mode.

Note regarding the categorization of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Israel and Russia: Despite the geographic location of the mentioned countries, they have been categorized as European due to their option of having candidates elected in to European federations.

Fact sheet

• Included in the analysis are executive committees in 118 of the most influential sports federations and associations. Included in the analysis are international and European federations representing an Olympic sport by October 2015 in addition to the IOC, the EOC, ANOC and members of ARISF.
• Only the highest board in each of the mentioned federations has been included. The criterion for the selection of members is their entitlement to vote resulting in 1.640 individuals.
• A weighing has been applied. The weighing involves the individuals’ status as member or president, member of a European or international federation, member of an Olympic or Non-Olympic federation, and a specific weighing for members of the IOC, EOC, ANOC, FIFA and EUFA. The 1.640 individuals have been given a score between 1 and 10 indicating the political power of their membership in each executive committee. See the employed weighing in the report. Note that the particular weighing is the authors attempt to quantify power, and it is very much open for debate.
