The organisation of DIF

DIF accepts only one national federation for each sport or each comparable sport as member. However, DIF has four multi-disciplinary sports federations as members: the Danish Association of Sports for the Disabled, the Danish Workers’ Sports Federation, the Danish National YMCA Sports Alliance and the Danish Military Sports Federation.

Sport in Denmark is organised through a pyramid structure.

DIF embraces considerably more types of sports than the number of member federations indicates. This is partly due to the fact that a number of federations have joined together, and partly because the national federations have taken up new events and integrated them in their regular activities, e.g. street basketball, beach volleyball, pool, snookers, aerobics, etc. Altogether the national federations under DIF comprise more than 100 different sports.

Sport in Denmark is organised in a pyramid structure. At the top of the pyramid is DIF which handles tasks of common interest to all federations at national level. The national federations primarily handle tasks within their own sports at national level. At regional level they are organised in district federations that are typically in charge of tournaments, competitions and education. Also at regional level are DIF’s county committees which handle the common interests of sport in relation to the county authorities, where especially the environment and physical planning are important issues.

At municipal level the local associations of sports clubs act as an umbrella to the local sports clubs. The local associations of sports clubs look after the interests of local clubs in relation to municipal authorities, and typically they act as representatives of sport in the municipal committees of youth and adult education which allocate funds to local sport.
